Hollywood Legion Post 43
Written by: Robin Garfield
Nearly every year for the past 15 years, HOBY is honored to receive a gift from the Hollywood Legion Post 43. We are proud to call them a donor and wanted to share a little bit about this wonderful organization.
The American Legion is a Congressionally chartered mutual-aid veterans organization of the US armed forces founded to benefit those veterans who served during a wartime period. The American Legion was founded in 1919 by veterans returning from Europe after World War I, and was later chartered under Title 36 of the United States Code. Nationally, the group has nearly 3 million members in over 14,000 Posts worldwide.
Post 43 received their charter in 1919. In the 1920’s the Legion built the Legion Fight Stadium and it was wildly popular among Hollywoods boxing fans and who’s who of Hollywood including Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Buster Keaton, the Marx Brothers, and the Three Stooges.
HOBY’s Founder and Veteran Hugh O’Brian, a member of the legion, and has personally spoke at many of their meetings and conventions. At 17, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1943 and became the youngest Drill Instructor in Marine Corps’ history and served until 1947. Upon his return home, Hugh parked cars at the Legion prior to his “big break.”
The goal of the American Legion is to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America; to maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a one hundred percent Americanism; to preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in the great wars; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation; to combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses; to make right the master of might; to promote peace and goodwill on earth; to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy; to consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.
We are grateful to the Hollywood Legion Post 43 and their Board Chair Mr. Terrance Duddy for their service to our country and for their generosity in helping build the next generation of young leaders.
