HOBY’s founder Hugh O’Brian believed that everyone “if given the opportunity and encouragement to recognize his or her own potential, regardless of background, has the freedom to choose in our world. Will an individual be a taker or a giver in life? Will that person be satisfied merely to exist, or seek a meaningful purpose? Will he or she dare to dream the impossible dream?”
In honor of Hugh’s birthday, we are launching the Leave Your Mark Campaign to change the narrative of the negative news cycle, that people don’t care about each other and that the only way to survive is to look out for number one. HOBY is full of people who care, who care about each other, their communities and a multitude of causes, who choose to lead lives of compassion and service.
So let’s break the cycle together.
We challenge anyone who has been touched by Hugh or HOBY to commit to Leaving Your Mark. We will highlight acts of service, kindness, and bravery by HOBY’s many alumni, volunteers and partners using #LeaveYourMark. Show us how you #LeaveYourMark and you will see yourself on our social media.
Have a student board meeting coming up? Snap a picture, tag and tell us how you plan to make a difference. Start a nonprofit after your seminar? Post a photo of your first program and use the hashtag. Participate in a HOBY alumni service day? Take a video of the group planting trees (or whatever your service is!), post it online and tag us!
There are awesome giveaways coming up for anyone that participates and we have a lot of outstanding service stories we can’t wait to share with you.
Hugh left his mark by creating HOBY. How will you leave yours?
“I believe every person is created as the steward of his or her own destiny with great power for a specific purpose: to share with others, through service, a reverence for life in a spirit of love.” – Hugh O’Brian (1925-2016)
