Here we are again. Another senseless, tragic school shooting leaving a trail of devastation, pain and loss in it’s wake. What was once unimaginable and unspeakable now feels routine. And that may be the greatest shame of these tragedies.
Yes, our thoughts and prayers always go out to the victims, families and the communities but that is not enough. Nearly everyone agrees, more needs to be done. We may have our personal opinions of what “more” entails; more gun control, more support and access to mental health services, more security in public places, a combination of these or perhaps even some different solution.
HOBY teaches and believes that everyone, including young people, can be powerful and effective leaders with the power to collaborate and take action. You cannot call yourself a leader if you are unwilling to do something, including talking and working with other people, even those with fundamentally different viewpoints. And perhaps, that is the best place to start.
If you’re angry, hurt, disappointed or sad, channel it into action. Reach out to someone, or many someones. Start or participate in a dialogue in your local community, school and neighborhood. Identify the solutions you believe in and work to get them implemented. Be loud and powerful and encourage and empower your friends to do the same.

Contact your governor and ask them how they intend to keep students safe— DoSomething.org makes it easy to get started: Text SAFE to 38383. Or, write your representatives: https://democracy.io/#!/
Register (or pre-register) to vote: https://turbovote.org/
And most importantly, support your friends and practice self-care—turn off the news, let yourself be sad, talk to loved ones or write your feelings down. If you are having trouble coping with your sadness or confusion (and that’s ok!) text with a crisis counselor by visiting https://www.crisistextline.org/ or text 741741.
Only once we all become engaged and stay engaged will we see some changes. We already know the price of inaction. Let’s see where doing something will get us.
