Matt Vlies is one of 5 HOBY alumni receiving a 2017 Alumni Achievement Award at the Albert Schweitzer Leadership Awards Gala in New York City on May 31st, 2017. HOBY’s Alumni Achievement Award recognizes outstanding HOBY Alumni who have distinguished themselves as leaders in professional, social, and philanthropic endeavors, and have carried that leadership with dignity and respect.
Matt Vlies is a Regulatory Compliance Manager for Walmart based in Illinois. In his 22 years with Walmart, Matt has had many roles ranging from department manager to store manager. In his current position, Matt helps in the development of policies and procedures to better support strategic business partners as well as in-store programs to guarantee compliance with state and local regulations. In this role, Matt keeps abreast on current and emerging risk trends to ensure the stores are safe for customers.
Matt earned his Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP) accreditation in 2013 from the Society of Compliance and Ethics professionals, which has helped him both professionally as well as through his volunteer commitments. He has supported management teams, developed leadership succession plans, and partnered with local suppliers to source new food items to meet the needs of each individual store’s customer base.
Matt is a volunteer with HOBY since his ambassador year in 1987 with HOBY Illinois. He is currently the President of the HOBY Illinois Corporate Board and HOBY Wisconsin Corporate Board. He has also served in various HOBY roles including facilitator to Leadership Seminar Chair in 2012 for HOBY Illinois North.
Matt’s passion lies in mentoring volunteers to meet or exceed their own abilities and expectations. More importantly, Matt helps volunteers and Ambassadors recognize their own potential. Matt has been a driving force in the long terms success of HOBY programs in Illinois and Wisconsin, but it doesn’t stop there. Since inception, Matt volunteers for HOBY’s Advanced Leadership Academy helping mentor students and volunteer. Matt received his BSS in Retail Management from the American Public University and his undergraduate degree from the College of Lake County.
