National Volunteer Week was established in 1974 and is about demonstrating to the nation that by working together, we have the fortitude to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals. According to Points of Light, “National Volunteer Week is about taking action and encouraging individuals and their respective communities to be at the center of social change – discovering and actively demonstrating their collective power to make a difference.”

WHO I AM IN REAL LIFE: A 32 year veteran REALTOR currently working for Century 21, Bob McElroy Realty and licensed Funeral Director, in partnership with my husband, Gene for Gompf Funeral Service and Werner Gompf Funeral Home. An active member of my community through various civic organizations and my local church.
I have a passion for both photography and music in addition to my professional life. Currently I perform with the Voices of Ohio in my “free time”, and manage my own Photography business, Visual Expressions. I reside in Cardington, Ohio and have five children I adore. The real loves of my life are my grandchildren, Kenzie, Cade, Makenna, Landon and Lydia. I value family and friendships above all else, but find my everyday strength in my personal relationship with Jesus Christ and my ever growing faith.
WHAT SHOULD EVERYONE KNOW ABOUT HOBY? HOBY is more than a leadership seminar, it creates a culture of self awareness, acceptance and tolerance of others in our diverse society, but most importantly, HOBY instills in our youth and volunteers a lifelong commitment to creating a positive impact both locally and globally through acts of service.
WHY DO I TAKE THE TIME TO VOLUNTEER? Some people approach volunteering with an attitude of “what is in this for me?” My HOBY time has never been about receiving any kind of reward, external or otherwise. Serving selflessly promotes growth within and for others. Telling youth that they need to serve others will never be as effective as modeling it or creating opportunities for them to do so.
HOW HAS HOBY INFLUENCED YOU? My 14 years with HOBY has afforded me the opportunity to further develop my personal leadership skills and push me beyond my comfort zone. I am truly a better person because of my HOBY experience. The influence of both ambassadors and other volunteers I have had the opportunity to encounter through the years has definitely impacted, for the better, the way I live my daily life.

WHO INSPIRES ME: My family. We are large and diverse, but in the end we grow and learn from one another.
BEST TIPS FOR NEW VOLUNTEERS: Be Yourself. Bring your heart, your sense of humor, your enthusiasm, step outside your comfort zone, be open to new ideas and embrace the spirit of HOBY.
