Region O Volunteer Spotlight

National Volunteer Week was established in 1974 and is about demonstrating to the nation that by working together, we have the fortitude to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals.  According to Points of Light, “National Volunteer Week is about taking action and encouraging individuals and their respective communities to be at the center of social change – discovering and actively demonstrating their collective power to make a difference.”

Julie Krause

NAME:  Julie Krause

AGE: 48

VOLUNTEER SITE(S) and/or PROGRAMS (WLC/ALA/CLeW): Founder, HOBY Turkey Affiliate, August 2012

YEARS WITH HOBY: 2.5 years

Tell us who you are in “real life” (hobbies, personal/family life, work, other volunteer activities, etc):  Who I am in ‘real life’ is an extension of my personal conviction that deep down inside what we all desire is to be acknowledged in some way and have someone be a witness to our life.  So, after being a mom to 5 children and a wife, I love creating programs and venues for people to gather and engage in meaningful and challenging ways.  In addition to HOBY Turkey, I organize 2 other youth gatherings and co-organize a group for expatriate women.  I also love to run, read and listen to podcasts.

What should everyone know about HOBY? HOBY is run by volunteers and staff who live out this quote by Albert Einstein,  “Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.”  HOBY volunteers and staff understand this principle because we gladly give of our time and money knowing our investment in HOBY is 100% value-added and will produce dividends to society through each and every HOBY Ambassador even if their value-added cannot be monetized.

We don’t pay you, so why do you make the time to volunteer? See above 2 answers

How has volunteering with HOBY influenced you? Because we offer 3 HOBY Turkey CLeWs a school year and they are open to 9-12th graders, I have the privilege of seeing the personal evolution of our Ambassadors over a 1 to 2 year period.  I am inspired and filled with hope when I get to witness our HOBY Ambassadors discover the gold nugget within and then take the risk to show it to the world and develop it through our CLeWs and service projects.

What is your favorite quote? In the end it’s not the years in your life that count.  It’s the life in your years.  Abraham Lincoln

What is your favorite book and what favorite food would you be eating while reading?  My favorite book is The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcom Gladwell.  Reading must be done while eating a Chipotle Burrito Bowl.

Who inspires you?  Anyone who lives simply and with sincerity towards others.

Best tips for new volunteers? Always start with the “Why” you do what you do.
